High Blood Pressure Treatment

High blood pressure treatments are varied, but they should also work together. The usual treatments are well known: lifestyle change through diet and exercise, maintenance medications, de-stressing activities as well as some alternative treatments that can be effective against hypertension without compromising the medications.

The lifestyle change through a good diet and exercise program is the top choice for anyone with hypertension. Getting rid of and avoiding nicotine, alcohol and caffeine is the first step. Once these are done successfully, eating of healthy foods which can lower cholesterol and blood pressure is next. These are usually fresh fruits and vegetables, lean meat, fish rich in omega-3 as well as nuts and seeds that not only taste good but are highly effective.

The next is maintenance medications. There are the ace inhibitors, the beta blockers, the calcium channel blockers and the angiotensin II receptor blockers. All of these decrease blood pressure in their own unique ways. There are also some with a diuretic combination which is designed to expel the excess fluid build up that can occur as a result of a high salt diet or because of the low capacity of the heart to pump. A good source of a diuretic is the cucumber.

Some de-stressing activities include relaxation which can be achieved through meditations or aromatherapy or herbal teas. These are highly effective alternatives that can augment the effect of the maintenance drugs.

One that is not really talked about is the recommendation of psychotherapists of a pet. Pets like dogs are known to lower the blood pressure by simply caressing their soft fur on their heads and ears. Not only do they provide companionship, but they give unconditional love to their humans and they can calm anyone with their capacity to love.

There are so many ways to lower hypertension that it is only a matter of getting educated on the different alternatives out there. Even good movies that leave one feeling euphoric or calm can soothe the nerves and lower blood pressure. Some even recommend good old comedy flicks which can make one forget about worries that can lead to sleepless nights. A good book is also a great way to relax, so even if sleep is not achieved immediately, the relaxation and the worry-free hours are there to help one go through the day.

It is not now beyond the physician to recommend alternative treatments for hypertension. Some even prescribe them to ensure compliance. Anything that will work for the patient is now acceptable, as long as they do not lead to disruption of their medications or cause any adverse effects.
